Two Wheels, One Community: Slow Spokes Rides Pedal Forward in North Tonawanda

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY – The streets of North Tonawanda are increasingly abuzz with the cheerful chatter and whirring gears of community cyclists, thanks to the flourishing Slow Spokes North Tonawanda group rides. Following a "fantastic night of cruising" on July 11th, the weekly event continues to draw a diverse array of riders, fostering a vibrant sense of community on two wheels.

"The energy, the weather, the music — it all came together for another memorable Slow Spokes ride," stated a recent post from the organization, highlighting the consistent success of their North Tonawanda gatherings. Each week brings a refreshing mix of new faces and familiar smiles, contributing to the distinct sense of camaraderie that defines these rides.

Slow Spokes, a group founded on the premise of connecting friends and family through the joy of group cycling and bicycle safety, has rapidly become a staple in the Western New York area, spanning Buffalo, North Tonawanda, and beyond. Whether you're a seasoned rider or just starting, the organization prides itself on its inclusive, fun, and safe social rides.

The success of the North Tonawanda rides is a testament to the strength of community partnerships. Slow Spokes extends immense gratitude to their home base, Fattey Beer Co. at the historic Wurlitzer Building, and to Platter’s Chocolate Factory for their continued support, particularly with check-in. Critical support also comes from dedicated volunteers, ride leaders, and the NT Auxiliary Police, who ensure rider safety on the roads.

The North Tonawanda community rides are a direct result of a collaboration with the NT Neighborhood Watch, a group recognized for its successful community-building initiatives, such as the Lumberjack Bike Park and The Imagination Station. This partnership has helped establish a popular weekly community bike ride similar to the well-established Slow Spokes Buffalo rides.

For those eager to join, Slow Spokes offers regular opportunities to hit the pavement:

  • "Rockin’ on the River Wednesdays": Every Wednesday at 6:00 PM, meeting at Old Man River (375 Niagara St, Tonawanda, NY 14150).

  • Weekly North Tonawanda Community Bicycle Ride: Every Thursday at 6:00 PM, starting from Fattey Beer Co. (908 Niagara Falls Blvd, North Tonawanda, NY 14120). Platter's Chocolate Factory proudly sponsors this ride.

Beyond the structured weekly rides, Slow Spokes riders can often be found exploring local trails and supporting local businesses, including promoting the Amherst Peanut Line Trail extension and the Saturday rides at the Clarence Hollow Farmers Market.

Safety remains a paramount concern for Slow Spokes. Riders are consistently reminded to "Stay Safe, Ride Smart" by adhering to traffic rules, using hand signals, and wearing bright or reflective clothing. Essential gear, including helmets, comfortable attire, a repair kit, and water, is highly recommended for all participants.

As an added incentive, Slow Spokes is sweetening the deal for regular riders. Every time a

participant joins a ride, they are entered, at no cost, into a drawing to win one of two fantastic bikes at the end of the season: a high-quality e-bike from American Harley-Davidson (on display at Platter’s Chocolate Factory) or a brand-new bike from Tom’s Pro Bike (on display at Fattey Beer Co.). The more rides you join, the better your chances will be!

These laid-back, inclusive rides truly welcome cyclists of all skill levels, offering a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, enjoy the local sights, and contribute to the vibrancy of the North Tonawanda community.
