Tonawanda, NY – On July 4th, 2025, the twin cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda are gearing up for a combined Independence Day celebration that promises a dazzling fireworks display and a whole evening of free entertainment, all while paying homage to a pivotal piece of New York's history. This year's "Fireworks on the Erie Canal" event will not only honor America's independence but also mark the 200th anniversary of the iconic Erie Canal.
"This year, it's more than just fireworks," said North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec. "We're turning this into a real family celebration, with something for everyone—from food and games to music and history."
The festivities are set to kick off at 6:00 PM on Webster Street in North Tonawanda, leading up to the grand fireworks display at dusk. Families can look forward to a vibrant array of activities, including a "Meet and Greet" tent with local police, an adventurous rock-climbing wall, challenging kids' obstacle courses, whimsical balloon artists, creative face painting, and a dedicated kids' game zone. A beloved tradition, the North Tonawanda Fire Department will also be serving free hot dogs to attendees.
A highlight of the evening's entertainment will be a live performance by the distinguished 198th Army Band, which will take the stage at the Canal Street Pavilion between 6:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Tonawanda Mayor John White expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "How much more patriotic can you get than having the 198th Army Band playing on the Fourth of July?"
The fireworks spectacular will be launched from the base of the Renaissance Bridge, ensuring magnificent views from both sides of the Erie Canal. Spectators are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show from either Tonawanda or North Tonawanda comfortably.
To ensure public safety and smooth crowd flow, local officials have implemented strict parking and boating restrictions. Streets surrounding the Renaissance Bridge will close at 5:00 PM, with the bridge itself becoming off-limits to traffic starting at 4:00 PM. "Anything left in that zone is going to be towed," Mayor White warned, urging residents to move their vehicles ahead of time.
Mayor Tylec added that the canal will be closely monitored by police and fire crews. "Boats won't be allowed to anchor near the fireworks zone. We'll have patrols on the water making sure everyone stays safe."
Notably, the entire celebration is fully funded by private sponsors, ensuring no taxpayer dollars were used for the event.

"This is the kind of event that brings people together - families, neighbors, and even visitors from nearby towns," Mayor Tylec concluded. "It's fun, it's free, and it celebrates everything great about our region, past and present."
