Thunder on the Niagara Set to Roar Back This August, Celebrating NFBRA's Rich History

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY – Get ready for the thrilling return of speed and spray as the Niagara Frontier Boat Racing Association (NFBRA) brings its annual "Thunder on the Niagara" hydroplane race back to Gratwick Park in North Tonawanda from August 2nd to 3rd, 2025. This action-packed weekend promises fast, loud hydroplane racing, celebrating the legacy of the region's oldest boat racing club.
Founded in the spring of 1939 by 14 visionary racing outboard hydroplane drivers, the NFBRA has been a cornerstone of the Western New York sports scene for over eight decades. Its original Board of Directors included pioneering figures like Bob Grabau, Raymond DeGlopper, Olive Howard, Ken Wolff, and Arthur Baitz, all dedicated to their core objective: promoting boat racing on the Niagara Frontier.
Over the years, NFBRA members have gained national and international recognition, celebrated throughout the United States and Canada for their exceptional racing skills, the incredible speed of their boats, their unwavering sportsmanship, and even achieving world records. Today, the NFBRA boasts a vibrant membership of over 50 individuals, encompassing owners, drivers, mechanics, and passionate enthusiasts all committed to developing and maintaining the exhilarating sport of boat racing in the Niagara region. For the past two decades, Gratwick Park has served as their beloved home, and the club aims to continue making it one of the premier locations for racing.
A Weekend of High-Octane Action
"Thunder on the Niagara" is designed to be a full-throttle experience for the entire family. The event officially kicks off Friday, August 1st, with preparations for the massive setup, including pit areas, VIP and Sponsor Tents, and the installation of docks. Pit security will be in place overnight to ensure a smooth start to the racing weekend.
Saturday, August 2nd, the excitement truly begins. The main entrance at Witmer Road opens for VIPs, officials, and vendors at 6:00 AM, while spectators can enter via Ward Road. Pits open at 7:00 AM, followed by a crucial safety meeting at 9:00 AM. The first heat of racing is slated for 10:00 AM, promising a full day of roaring engines and competitive action until 5:00 PM. The day concludes with a private pit party pavilion for contestants, sponsors, officials, and workers.
Sunday, August 3rd, begins with heightened anticipation. At 9:45 AM, a powerful ceremony will feature the playing of the U.S., Canadian, and New Zealand National Anthems, followed by flag laps with vintage Skiffs and words of welcome from the Mayor of North Tonawanda. The first heat of the day ignites at 10:15 AM. A special intermission from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM will showcase the timeless beauty and power of Vintage GP and Vintage Skiffs. Racing concludes again at 5:00 PM, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 6:00 PM.
Throughout the weekend, attendees can explore a variety of food trucks, food vendors, and craft vendors, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy beyond the thrilling races.

With a current membership of over 50, the NFBRA remains dedicated to further developing and maintaining boat racing in the Niagara region. Membership is open to anyone interested in the sport. Applications can be requested via mail addressed to the club at 4068 East River Rd., Grand Island, NY 14072. Meetings are presently held on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM at the Grand Island Rod and Gun Club.
