Platter's Chocolates Sweetly Crowned "Business of the Year" by Tonawandas Chamber of Commerce

North Tonawanda, NY – Platter's Chocolates, a beloved local institution and family-owned chocolate manufacturer, has been named the Business of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas. The prestigious award recognizes Platter's long-standing commitment to quality products, community engagement, and its cherished role in the region.

Joe Urban, President of Platter's Chocolates, accepted the honor with heartfelt gratitude. "We are truly flattered to be chosen for this honor," Urban stated. "We dedicate this award to all of YOU! Truly, when you sell a product in a community, it's the buzz and feedback from the customer that gets you noticed. It's just an amazing honor and we are truly humbled."

Platter's Chocolates has been a cornerstone of the North Tonawanda community for over 85 years, tracing its origins back to 1938. What began in Carl Platter's basement with his wife, Vera, selling their unique orange chocolate door-to-door during lean times, has blossomed into a Western New York confectionery landmark.

Known for its distinctive specialties, Platter's is particularly renowned for its signature orange chocolate and the regional treat, sponge candy, a crunchy, whipped toffee flavored center enveloped in rich chocolate. Beyond these classics, the company offers a wide array of creams, caramels, jellies, and molded chocolates.

The company's evolution saw it move from its humble basement beginnings, eventually purchased by Roger Urban in 1972, to its impressive current home in the historic Wurlitzer Building at 908 Niagara Falls Boulevard, North Tonawanda. The 2016 move allowed Platter's to expand its offerings, creating a comprehensive destination for visitors. Here, patrons can enjoy a full retail shop, a cozy cafe serving coffee and baked goods, and an ice cream parlor featuring Perry's Ice Cream and homemade custards, including the popular orange chocolate custard. A unique feature of the Wurlitzer location is the public viewing areas, allowing visitors to watch the chocolate-making process firsthand.

Under the current leadership of Joe and Heidi Urban, Platter's continues to uphold the founding principle Roger Urban instilled: "provide a quality product at a price folks can afford." This commitment, coupled with its deep roots in the community, has fostered a loyal customer base that spans generations.

Platter's also actively contributes to the community through various initiatives, including a robust fundraising program for schools and non-profits, and its annual Sponge Candy 5K race, which supports local charitable organizations.

The Business of the Year award serves as a testament to Platter's Chocolates' enduring legacy, its dedication to crafting delicious treats, and its invaluable contribution to the vibrant business landscape and community spirit of the Tonawandas.
