North Tonawanda High Implements New Device Ban, Announces Major Building Upgrades for Enhanced Security

North Tonawanda, NY – North Tonawanda Senior High School (NTHS) is set to embark on the 2025-2026 academic year with significant changes, including the immediate implementation of a state-mandated "Distraction-Free School Zone" policy and plans for a major security-enhanced front entrance project. Principal Bradley W. Rowles outlined these critical updates in a recent communication to the NTHS community, emphasizing a focus on enhanced safety, a stronger learning environment, and community support.

Beginning with the first day of school, NTHS will enforce a "bell-to-bell" ban on all internet-enabled devices for students. This new policy is a direct result of Governor Kathy Hochul's "Distraction Free School Zone" initiative, which became part of the 2026 New York State budget passed in May.

"NYS was clear that districts must implement district-aligned Distraction Free School Zone policies by August 2025, and all building practices must be in place by the first day of school in September," Principal Rowles stated.

He noted that NTHS began reviewing its device policy in April and engaged in extensive stakeholder discussions, including monthly Dignity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee meetings and Shared Decision-Making meetings. A district-wide ThoughtExchange survey conducted in March garnered unprecedented participation, with over 1,000 residents completing the survey and providing over 25,000 responses, informing the new policies and practices.

Under the new device policy, students are required to power down internet-enabled devices and store them in their assigned lockers from 7:40 AM to 2:35 PM. To ensure students can still make necessary calls, NTHS has designated three building-wide locations: the Main Office, Attendance Office, and Student Support Center. Parents and guardians can reach the school for any reason by calling (716) 807-3600. Violations of the new policy will be addressed through a step-by-step disciplinary approach.

Looking ahead, NTHS is also preparing for a significant upgrade to its physical infrastructure. Starting in Spring 2026, the school will break ground on a new, security-enhanced front entrance project. This project, which district residents overwhelmingly supported through a capital improvement measure approved in Spring 2024, aims to create a clear separation between visitors and members of the "Lumberjack Family," while also updating the attendance office and installing advanced security features at the main entrance.

"The main entrance project is the first of numerous upgrades to our building," Principal Rowles affirmed. "More information about these building-based capital improvement projects will be communicated as we approach project launch dates."

As the 2025-2026 school year officially kicks off, Principal Rowles conveyed optimism and hope, reiterating the Lumberjack Family's mission to support and nurture members' goals and aspirations. He encouraged students and staff to "mentor and lead by example by being strong and dedicated Lumberjacks."

For the upcoming year, the NTHS main entrance (flagpole) will open daily at 7:00 AM. Students will gather in the Cafeteria Wing until the breakfast bell rings to release them to the main academic areas. A continuing benefit for all students is that breakfast and lunch will remain free for ALL NTHS students this school year.

Parents are reminded of attendance expectations, with the 1st period beginning at 7:40 AM. Excused absences include court appearances, illness, family death, education, religious observation, or impassable roads, requiring a written excuse within three days. Contact information for the Attendance Office is available based on students' last names (A-L: 716-807-3649; M-Z: 716-807-3616).

Athletes registered for fall sports should check the school's athletic department website for try-out dates and times, and game schedules.
