North Tonawanda celebrated a significant milestone today as construction commenced at Charles Fleischmann Park. This project is a part of the city's Smart Growth 2.0 initiative and one of the two major Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects currently underway, thanks to the support of Governor Kathy Hochul, Empire State Development, Niagara River Greenway Commission, and Legislator Rich Andres.
The transformation of Charles Fleischmann Park will turn it into a welcoming downtown gateway, complete with a new clock tower, updated landscaping, walking paths, sidewalks, public seating, and streetscape enhancements along Webster Street. This project is a crucial part of the city's efforts to create more walkable, connected, and inviting spaces for its residents and visitors.
"We are thrilled to break ground at Charles Fleischmann Park and take another step forward in our city's revitalization efforts," said North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec. "This project, along with the upcoming $3M+ Oliver Street Streetscape & Infrastructure Improvement Project, will bring new life and energy to our downtown area."
The Oliver Street Streetscape & Infrastructure Improvement Project will bring the same level of investment and enthusiasm to another key corridor in the city. The combined efforts of these projects will help create a more vibrant and connected community for all.
The city extends its gratitude to the elected officials, city staff, design and construction teams, and the dedicated members of the community who have played a vital role in bringing this vision to life. As progress continues, North Tonawanda looks forward to sharing more updates and celebrating the transformation of its downtown area.
