North Tonawanda, NY – North Tonawanda's student/ athlete Derek Black. Derek is nominated for Sports Illustrated as Youth Athlete of the Year. There is still time. To vote. Voting ends today at 7:00. Thank you for your support!
In an inspiring display of resilience and pure athleticism, Derek, a remarkable three-sport varsity athlete, is redefining what's possible on the field, court, and ice. Born without his right hand, Derek has consistently proven that physical challenges are no match for an indomitable spirit, dominating in ice hockey, football, and lacrosse.
For Derek, the absence of his right hand has never been a barrier. His athleticism consistently measures up to the highly skilled players he competes against. This unique journey has not only honed his physical abilities. Still, it has also instilled in him an extraordinary capacity to handle pressure and maintain unwavering resilience in the face of adversity. He embraces the "unusual challenges" as opportunities to build an even stronger determination, striving not just for eligibility, but for definitive victory.
"There is a difference between eligibility and victory, and Derek’s determined not only to participate, but to succeed," his parents shared, reflecting on his mindset.
Behind Derek's unwavering drive is his greatest inspiration: his mother, Summer. From a difficult pregnancy and delivery, Summer's belief in Derek's resilience and potential for excellence has remained steadfast. Her unwavering faith and insightful guidance have profoundly shaped Derek, teaching him the critical lesson of never giving up, especially on himself. Derek proudly mirrors her confidence and strength, both in competitive play and in his daily life, constantly striving for his highest aspirations.
One defining moment in Derek's athletic career exemplifies his incredible perseverance. During his sophomore year, a broken arm sustained during a football game was followed by a re-break shortly after healing, sidelining him for the entire varsity hockey season. Yet, Derek refused to be defeated. Instead of succumbing to the setback, he channeled his energy into the school's indoor track team, maintaining his peak athleticism throughout his recovery. He returned to his primary sports "stronger and unafraid," a testament to his unbreakable spirit. "As his parents, we could not be prouder of his perseverance," they added.
Derek's story is one of determination, strength, and the power of an inspiring support system. His journey serves as a potent reminder that true success lies not just in participation but in the relentless pursuit of one's goals, regardless of obstacles.
He is currently a candidate for Youth Athlete of the Year, and supporters can cast free daily votes or make a donation-vote, contributing to two vital causes: the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Why Not You Foundation. Voting for Derek isn't just about recognizing an exceptional athlete; it's about supporting a young man who embodies the very spirit of "Why Not You?"
