OAK ORCHARD RIVER, NY – Adventure seekers and football fanatics alike are gearing up for a unique nighttime kayaking and canoeing expedition this Saturday, September 6th, on the Oak Orchard River. Organized by local enthusiast Tom Wil, this challenging 9-mile "NFL Theme" paddle promises an unforgettable experience for seasoned paddlers.
The event, advertised as a public invitation, encourages participants to don their favorite NFL team gear as they navigate the river under the cover of darkness. The journey is set to commence with a 7:30 PM launch from Slade Road, aiming to conclude between 12:00 AM and 1:00 AM at the Townline takeout point.
"Summer is short, let's make the most of it," stated organizer Tom Wil, highlighting the spirit behind the demanding five-hour, fifteen-minute adventure. He emphasized that this challenging paddle is strictly for experienced kayakers and canoeists due to its duration and nighttime conditions. "Participation is at your own risk," Wil reiterated, stressing the importance of preparedness and skill.
Logistics for the evening include an initial meeting point at Slade Road around 6:15 PM for kayak drop-off and truck staging at Townline. Wil plans to arrange a shuttle service back to the Slade Road put-in before the launch to streamline the experience for participants.
Safety and visibility are paramount for this nocturnal voyage. Paddlers are required to bring essential gear, including life jackets, paddle leashes, bug spray, and glow sticks. An intense light for the front of the boat and/or a reliable headlight is also mandatory to ensure safe passage.
Mid-journey, the group plans to take a well-deserved break and enjoy a campfire at Pebble Beach, offering a chance to regroup and warm up under the night sky. Participants are reminded of the "leave no trace" policy and are strongly encouraged to carry out all garbage and avoid littering along the picturesque river.
Wil also extended an invitation for experienced paddlers to volunteer, noting he usually leads the group but would appreciate assistance in guiding the middle and back sections of the pack. This nighttime paddle is part of a broader vision for Wil, who aims to host a full moon paddle every month through the summer and into October, provided the weather remains conducive.
