TONAWANDA, N.Y. – Get ready to see the Erie Canal in a whole new light – or rather, in the dark! Tonawanda resident David DeMart is organizing a unique "After Dark" paddle event for kayakers, canoers, and paddleboarders of all skill levels on Saturday, August 2, 2025, beginning at 8:15 p.m. from Tonawanda's Gateway Harbor.
The event, designed to offer a novel perspective of the historic waterway under the stars, strongly encourages participants to outfit their vessels with lights or buddy up with others who have illumination. "This is a sundown event!" DeMart emphasized in his public announcement, highlighting the crucial need for visibility once daylight fades.
DeMart, a local enthusiast, stressed several logistical considerations to ensure a smooth and safe experience for everyone. A key concern is managing traffic and parking at the various launch points. In a heartwarming move, DeMart has enlisted his daughter's help in managing parking, requesting a small $5 donation per person towards her college fund. Participants with multiple vehicles are encouraged to use them for shuttling or carpooling to avoid overcrowding the lots, especially the final destination.
Safety is paramount for the nighttime adventure. While a map outlining distances will be available, DeMart advises participants to be realistic about their endurance. Mayors Park is noted as an approximate halfway point and the last designated take-out before a longer stretch to the finish. "There's no shame in it," DeMart said, acknowledging the physical demands of paddling several miles.
Beyond the logistics, DeMart outlined simple rules for participants: "Have a good time and encourage others to join," "Be respectful and responsible for your stuff and group," and "Don't disrespect this event and leave trash in the water." He also reminded paddlers that the Erie Canal is a "traveled waterway," urging them to be aware of other boat traffic. "Think of yourselves as walking on the side of the road," he cautioned.
As this is the first attempt at organizing such a large-scale nocturnal paddle, DeMart asks for patience and cooperation from all participants. "There's going to be issues that need ironing out. Please be patient. Please help fellow boosters and buddy up for carpool. Help make this great," he urged.
Participants are reminded that they are responsible for their own gear, snacks, and any other necessary items. DeMart's enthusiasm for the event is palpable. "I can't wait to see you all," he shared. "I can't wait to see all your boats, I can't wait for the passersby to see us."
The "After Dark" paddle promises to be a memorable addition to Tonawanda's summer calendar, offering a unique blend of community, adventure, and nocturnal beauty on the Erie Canal. Those interested in participating are encouraged to prepare their lights, plan their logistics, and join David DeMart for an unforgettable night on the water.
