Buffalo Rallies for Suicide Prevention: Annual Walk Returns to Canalside This September

BUFFALO, NY – The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is calling on the Western New York community to step up and make a difference at the annual Buffalo Walk, slated for Friday, September 20, 2025, at Canalside. This vital event, part of AFSP's nationwide "Out of the Darkness" walk series, aims to raise awareness and critical funds for suicide prevention research, education, support, and advocacy.

With a goal of $375,000, the Buffalo Walk has already seen significant community engagement, having raised $51,927 to date from 617 donations. Nearly 600 individuals (587 participants) have registered, forming 129 teams, all united in the fight against suicide.

The Buffalo Walk is more than just a fundraiser; it's a powerful demonstration of solidarity and remembrance. Participants walk in honor of loved ones lost, support survivors of suicide loss, and advocate for mental health awareness. The funds raised directly support AFSP's multifaceted approach to suicide prevention, which includes:

  • Research: Funding studies that lead to new understandings and prevention methods.

  • Education: Delivering programs like "Talk Saves Lives™" to teach communities how to recognize signs of distress.

  • Support: Providing resources for those affected by suicide and connecting individuals in need with help.

  • Advocacy: Pushing for mental health legislation and funding at both the federal and state levels.

"Your Action = Real Impact," states the event's promotional material, emphasizing that every contribution, no matter the size, helps AFSP continue its life-saving work. AFSP has grown into a national movement with chapters in all 50 states and is recognized as the largest private funder of suicide prevention research.
